Meridian, Miss. A national conference on civil rights wrapped up Tuesday in Meridian.
The theme was "Rise, Advocate, Educate and Cooperate".
the event brought in speakers from around the country to talk about issues important to every community, even extending to the topics of sexual violence and financial freedom.
Philadelphia Mayor James Young presided over Tuesday's sessions. He commended conference organizer, Dr. Keith Parker, for promoting a conversation about serious issues.
"His passion about Mississippi, changing how we think about Mississippi and actually projecting a new Mississippi. And if we proclaim to be new then we're going to have to take this to the next level," said Young. "And that is all races working together to bring prosperity and peace and harmony to our communities."
The cities of Philadelphia and Meridian co-sponsored the conference, with Mayor Young and Mayor Cheri Barry presiding during three days of events.
