Issues Brought to Civil Service Commission

The Meridian Civil Service Commission Tuesday rejected Mayor Percy Bland's requests for temporary appointments to four positions, including the director of parks and recreation.

Commissioners said they had received only a copy of these requests and not a direct request from the mayor. The requests for the appointments of those positions were then withdrawn by the city attorney, so they can be later submitted through the proper procedure.

Also at the meeting, former Meridian police captain, Dean Harper, filed an appeal of his termination.

The commission then voted to set a hearing on the matter at its next meeting, which will take place Dec. 10. Harper was fired in October.
