The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors have approved a new cooperative agreement between the county and the city. Meridian City Council is expected to approve the agreement as well at their meeting on Tuesday.

The purpose of the agreement is to demolish building that are not safe or sanitary. According to documents obtained by Newscenter 11, the city will provide the county with a list of house ready to be demolished. The county will then be responsible for providing labor, machinery, and equipment for the demolition. That is unless the county choose not to demolish a certain property, the city is then free to accept bids for third parties for demolition.

"Well if you go back to the history of it, basically we agreed to help the city clean up the community," Board of Supervisors President Joe Norwood says. "And basically I think we have done a good job so far."

"So just as soon as the Attorney General approves the agreement, we will be begin tearing houses down," Lauderdale County Engineer Neal Carson says.

Carson adds that demolition work is typically done in the first quarter of the year, but with it being an election year, work had to be delayed until a new agreement could be reached.

If the Meridian City Council approves the agreement at their meeting on Tuesday, the deal is good until December 31, 2015.
