DYW Contestants Prepare for State Competition

Meridian, Mississippi Work is underway at Meridian's Temple Theatre for 35 young women as they prepare to compete for this year's title of Distinguished Young Woman of Mississippi.

The girls who come from all over the state began learning their opening number Monday morning. The girls and officials say that a lot of hard work will go into this week, but these ladies are hoping to take home more than just a title.

"I know this week is the competition, it's for the title of Mississippi's Distinguished Young Woman but I think I'm more excited to meet the girls and make friendships that will hopefully last a lifetime," said Tanner Fant, Starkville's Distinguished Young Woman.

The girls also learned the choreography for their fitness routine which counts as 15 percent of their overall scores. Preliminary competition begins Thursday night at 7:30 at the Temple Theatre.
