The 2015 Distinguished Young Women Program of Mississippi program got kicked off Thursday night at the Temple Theatre in Meridian.
35 young ladies took to the stage for their first night of preliminary competition. The diamond group performed their talent part of the program Thursday night and completed their interview earlier Thursday. The sapphire group performed their fitness and self expression routines on-stage. The program chair says this is a special group of young ladies.
"This is the best and brightest that Mississippi has to offer. The girls are amazing in every way. It's just really impressive to see high school juniors perform on stage at a high level," said DYW Program Chair Sid Wilkinson.
This year also marked the first for a new emcee after state Senator Terry C. Burton retired last year. Megan West of WAPT-TV served in that role this year. The second night of preliminary competition will begin at 7:30 Friday evening.
