Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie says that some drivers are just so anxious to pick something up from the store, that they don't even take time to turn their car off and lock it.
"Everyone wants to run out of their vehicles and run in to the store to get that gallon of milk or that soft drink and then get back in their vehicle," Sollie says.
Sollie says drivers are making it easier for thieves to just get in and drive off, especially since he says people lurk in parking lots and notice a pattern. Sollie tells Newscenter 11 that all you need to do is simply take a few seconds to secure your car before you leave, regardless of whether it is daylight or not. Also, he says don't leave personal items in sight.
"You know, it's going to be a continuing problem," he says. "Our society is so demanding of 'I want to do it right now. I don't want to take the time to do it right.' So, all we can do is try to remind the motoring public and then try to recover their car once its stolen."
Sollie says some newer cars are easier to recover because of technology.
