Fallen Firefighter Memorial Service

In honor of Fire Prevention Month and Fallen Firefighter Memorial Weekend, Salem Baptist Church held a very special service this morning. Lauderdale County Fire Service Coordinator Allan Dover gave the history of fire service dating from Ancient Rome all the way to today. They also showed that firefighters not only battle blazes, but respond to car accidents and medical calls too.

"We'll be giving them a little bit of history on the fire service and basically informing the church members and congregation what it is that we do in the fire service."

On February 17, 2011, Firefighter Larry Gressett lost his life in the line of duty only about 2 miles from Salem Baptist Church. He is buried there at his home church, and many members of the congregation have also answered the call to serve.

"They have a very strong tie to the volunteer community. A lot of the members of this congregation are also volunteers with the Toomsuba/Alamucha Fire Department."

Dover enjoys the time he and his firefighters have to get out in the community and talk to the people they serve.

"It's just a nice way for the community to say hello to us. It just gives us a chance to educate the public on what it is we do and where we came from."

Fallen Firefighters will continue to be honored for the rest of the month.
