Fatal Shooting in Meridian

Meridian police are investigating the first shooting death of 2013.

It occurred around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday on Grand Avenue.

The victim, 37-year-old TeRandy Hampton, was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been shot in the head.

Police had responded to a report of shots being fired near the intersection with St. John Street.

Officials say they are examining evidence gathered at the scene and interviewing witnesses as well as persons of interest who were picked up shortly afterwards.

Lenita Buie, an employee at McDonald and Hill, which is just down the street from where the shooting occurred, says she was going about her
business until she noticed a heavy police presence in the area.

"We started seeing police cars go by and a few minutes later, a police lady came up to us and asked if we had heard anything, if we saw anybody running, or if we had heard any loud noises like a truck back-firing or anything. And we told her we didn't hear anything," said Buie.

If anyone has information about the shooting or a suspect or suspects, please call Crimestoppers at 601-485-1860.
