Meridian, Miss. The attorney for two former Meridian police officers and Meridian's City Attorney have agreed to hold off on the officers' appeals until issues are resolved surrounding Meridian's Civil Service Commission.
It's been nearly three weeks since Meridian Mayor Percy Bland fired four of the five commissioners, just before they were set to hear the appeals of fired police officers Don Hopkins and Dean Harper.
Commissioners are now due a hearing themselves, but the Mayor and Council clashed over just who would hear their cases. An Attorney General's opinion has been requested. Monday, City attorney Michael Goggans and the officers' attorney Bill Ready, Jr. released a joint statement, saying, in part, the continuance is in the best interest of all parties and is necessary to ensure a fair appeals process.
