Newton, Miss. The Friends of Mississippi Veterans held its annual meeting Thursday at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Newton.
Major Gen. Leon Collins was the keynote speaker for the meeting. Veterans and their families gathered at the cemetery to discuss plans for cemetery's future.
The Friends of Mississippi Veterans helped to establish the cemetery. Now the organization is looking to put the cemetery on the map as one of the best.
"This is going to be the Arlington of the south. There's no doubt about it," said Collins. "This will be the showcase when it comes to military cemeteries in our country. And we're going to do everything we have to do to make sure that that's the way it turns out. "
The members opted to put a dedication to the veterans under the large oak tree where they held the meeting Thursday.
