Decatur, Miss. Flags are flying at half-staff on the East Central Community College campus in memory of its former president.
Dr. Eddie M. Smith died at his home Monday after a lengthy illness.
The funeral will be Wednesday, Apr. 16, at Clarke-Venable Baptist Church. Visitation will be 9 a.m. till 11 a.m., with the service to follow.
ECCC president, Dr. Billy Stewart, said the college and the community lost a great man.
“Dr. Smith served as president of this institution with honor, integrity, and a commitment to excellence for 15 years. He left an indelible mark on East Central Community College and on the lives of those who were fortunate to know him," Stewart said. "We are a stronger and better institution today because of Dr. Smith’s leadership. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Charlotte, and daughters, Kelli and Wendy.”
Dr. Smith, 71, led the institution from 1985 to 2000 and served his alma mater as its sixth president.
“Dr. Smith was a devoted family man and a devout Christian, whose contributions to the Mississippi Community College System are too numerous to list," said Ovid Vickers, retired ECCC faculty member of his former student. "He was a very dedicated educator and had devoted his life to the process of education. He served well as the President of ECCC.”
Enrollment increased each of Smith's 15 years in leadership at ECCC. He's also credited with upgrading program offerings, campus facilities and workforce education and training.
