Gressett Among Fallen Firefighters to be Remembered

The 31st Annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service will honor four Mississippi firefighters who died in the line of duty.

They are among the 80 firefighters who died in 2011 and five firefighters who died in previous years who will be remembered at the official national service held at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland Sunday, Oct. 7.

Firefighter Larry C. Gressett, Sr., 33, of the Toomsuba-Alamucha Fire & Rescue drowned while trying to rescue a man who had fallen out of a boat Feb. 17, 2011.

Firefighter Jacob Anthony Carter, 18, of the Becker-Athens Volunteer Fire Department died in a vehicle accident while responding to a mutual aid fire call April 17, 2011.

Firefighter Charles E. Foster, 59, of the Barton Fire Department died after suffering a heart attack while clearing debris from severe storms April 29, 2011.

Firefighter Joshua Jay Wilkes, 26, of the Unity Fire Department died after responding to a structure fire February 13, 2011.

The names of those firefighters who died in the line of duty will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial on the Academy grounds. The national tribute is sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the Department of Homeland Security.

Families will receive flags flown over the U. S. Capitol and the National Memorial.
