'Hairspray' Stars Broadway Actress
Meridian, Miss. The star of Jefferson Performing Arts Society's production of Hairspray is Michelle Dowdy, who also starred in the musical on Broadway.

The musical 'Hairspray' will be presented Sunday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. at the Temple Theatre.
Its star performed for three years in the Broadway production of 'Hairspray'.
Michelle Dowdy plays the lead role of 'Tracy', a young woman who wants to get on a Baltimore dance show, but is discriminated against because of her size. Against all odds, she makes it and then takes on racial segregation on the dance show.
"It's a blast and it's a really wonderful show. And the music's great," Dowdy said. "And you'll leave singing with not just one but multiple songs. And the cast is stellar. Everyone is amazing. And it's just a blast to come see and you'll have a wonderful time. It's a great message."
Dowdy is appearing with the Jefferson Performing Arts Society at shows in Meridian, Metairie and New Orleans. For tickets call 601-693-5353.
'Hairspray' will also be presented for school children Monday, Feb. 13.
