Area residents had the opportunity to learn about the importance of preventing or managing diabetes.
The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi hosted its first annual Diabetes Health and Awareness Day at EMEPA on Highway 39 North on Tuesday. Participants also learned about keeping blood pressure under control, the proper tests one should undergo, and which foods are important to eat. Experts say Mississippi leads the nation in cases of diabetes.
"It's important," according to Irena McClain with the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. "There are so many self care tasks that people with diabetes need to do to take care of themselves. And not knowing what to do when you have this disease, can really result in some serious complications."
Representatives from Anderson Regional Medical Center and Rush Foundation Hospital were also on hand for the event.
