Although many are eager to enroll, no one will receive coverage until Jan. 1, 2014. Anyone who enrolls prior to Dec. 15 will receive coverage at the start of the new year.
"I can tell you right now there is a tremendous number of individuals in Mississippi seeking assistance through this insurance program and (it) just tells you how much of a need is out there," said Wilbert Jones, CEO of Greater Meridian Health Clinic.
"We allow people to enroll over the telephone, give their information and receive assistance over the telephone," said GMHC's outreach director, Beverly Hearn. "In doing so, their (phone) system also went down."
Open enrollment for the new healthcare law continues until Mar. 31, 2014.
