Meridian, Miss. While Memorial Day is dubbed as the unofficial kickoff to summer, Labor Day takes the title as the unofficial end to summer. With gas prices being some of the lowest in recent years for Labor Day, Sgt. Andy West of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, says they expect to see more motorists on the roads and they are prepared.

"We're going to utilize every available resource that we have," West said. "We're going to have guys that would normally be on their days off come back to work. Trying to increase our presence on the highway as much as possible and working hand in hand with other agencies."

West says motorists can expect to see roadside safety checkpoints, as well as more highway patrolmen on the road, as it's a way to hopefully keep fatalities down.

"In the past, Labor Day has actually been one of the most deadly holidays that we actually work." West said. "We would like to take a proactive approach and we want to try to heighten public awareness of this. Be aware of this, Labor Day you're sharing the roads with other drivers."

According to West, one of the biggest tips on staying safe is driving defensively.

"You're sharing that highway with somebody else and you have to take a defensive strategy on it," West said. "Regardless if you are doing everything right. If you are abiding by the law, there's a possibility of having somebody out there that's not."

West also says it's important to be mindful of those who may be on the road drinking and driving.
