Holiday Employment Outlook

Manpower staffing specialist David Lauderdale spends a lot of time on the phone, as he tries to find jobs for people looking for work.

"Oh yeah, people are coming through every 20 minutes through the door," said Lauderdale. "There are a lot of people who need work right now."

Because of the slow economy, Lauderdale has not seen a lot of holiday hiring. He says that does not mean you shouldn't consider temporary work.

"We have recently seen a surge in the temps we have out. So hopefully that will continue," Lauderdale said.

Often when people think of holiday work, retail stores automatically come to mind. According to Lauderdale, however, that is not the case this year. Instead, construction work is where you may find those temporary jobs.

"If you come through Manpower, try to get a temporary construction job or maybe a clerical job," said Lauderdale.

With this in mind, retail jobs should not be completely eliminated. According to Renee Williams, the manager of Bonita Lakes Mall, stores there will be hiring for the holiday season.

"Yes, there are quite a few stores throughout the mall that are doing holiday hiring right now," Williams said. "The job opportunities that we know of are available on our website at bonitalakesmall.com. Of course, anybody can come and most of the retailers have signs if they are doing holiday hiring."

Whether you're looking for construction or retail work, you may submit your resume for assistance to manpowerjobs.com.

There are east Mississippi residents out of work right now. The latest unemployment rates are:
Lauderdale - 10.4%

Kemper - 12.9%

Neshoba - 9.9%

Newton - 9.8%

Clarke - 11.3%
