Meridian, Miss. Lauderdale County's foster grandparents were honored for their service at a luncheon Thursday.
The city of Meridian Parks and Recreation Department hosted the event at the city's activity center. Meridian Mayor Percy Bland recognized the volunteers.
Coordinator Carlotta Downing says it's important to recognize the big contribution these senior volunteers make to our community.
"They tutor and mentor at-risk children in the elementary schools and the head start centers," said Downing. "They try to help them come up to the other level of the other children."
Downing says the program has about 65 volunteers working at least twenty hours each week.
