The mayor of Marion says he hopes to avoid a tax increase, but still increase funding to the town's police department.
Mayor Elvis Hudson told the Lauderdale County Council of Governments Monday that town officials are busy crunching numbers to meet a budget deadline.
Hudson says it's important to improve police protection for Marion's citizens, and he's hopeful recent economic growth will help make that a reality.
"I'm pleased at the growth. It has helped our bottom line considerably," said Hudson. "The more retail that I can get into the town of Marion, with the help of the good people of the town of Marion, that will help defer the costs of property taxes. "
Marion's fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
