Inmate Charged with Assaulting Officer

Lauderdale County, Miss. An inmate at the Lauderdale County Detention Facility has been charged with the assault of a correctional officer.

Roy Nealy was already incarcerated on a carjacking charge under $100,000 bond. He now has an additional $5,000 bond for the assault charge.

Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun says that Nealy attacked the officer early Sunday. The jailer was treated at a hospital for a laceration and a chipped tooth.

"In Mississippi, when you assault a law enforcement officer, correctional officer, that is a felony charge," said Calhoun. "So we will be presenting that case to the next available grand jury for an indictment. "

The correctional officer was not seriously injured and Calhoun says he is recovering well.
