Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said she would perform autopsies Friday on the bodies of a police detective and a murder suspect who died in a shooting Thursday evening at Jackson police headquarters.

Detective Eric Smith, who had been on the force since 1995, and suspect Jeremy Powell, 23, died in an interrogation room being used to question Powell about a recent homicide.

Investigators were working to determine what set off the shooting.

Officers reported hearing several gunshots, and when they went to the room, found both Smith and Powell dead of multiple gunshot wounds.

Police did not release any details on the sequence of what happened, and said the case has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
