Johnson Holds Book Signing

A local Civil Rights icon took time to sign copies of his new book on Saturday.

Reverend Charles Johnson signed copies of "Called to the Fire" at the Bible Bookstore in downtown Meridian. Johnson was the key witness to take the stand in the trial famously dubbed by the FBI as the 'Mississippi Burning' case. In the book, Johnson chronicles his experiences in Mississippi since first arriving as a young minister in the early 1960's.

"It's important to me because it opens up a lot of things that our young people do not know about and that they haven't learned in their history," Johnson explains. "And I found out if you don't know where you came from, you're subject to wind up in the same ole place again."

The book is now on sale at the Bible bookstore and Books-A-Million.
