Meridian, Miss. Local Civil Rights icon Roscoe Jones says he is still trying to process the fact that the historic COFO building is no more.
Saturday afternoon, Crews demolished the Council of Federated Organizations buidling, formerly known as the Fielder and Brooks Drug Store. The building was home to several Civil Rights organizations back in the 1960s. Jones says the city of Meridian has been forever changed.
"In fact, on the 29th of this month, there is a group of students from Baltimore, Maryland coming here that I was going to meet," Jones explains. "But I'm going to tell them to bypass Meridian, I'll meet them some place else. I don't care to meet them here. I can tell my story some place else, I don't have to tell it here in Meridian."
Lauderdale County Youth Court Judge Veldore Young owns the building. She tells Newscenter 11 she will not be issuing any statements at this time.
