Biloxi, Mississippi An official with Mississippi's commission for Hurricane Katrina recovery says that eight years later, a goal set by former Gov. Haley Barbour has been realized.
Barbour told the Governor's Commission on Recovery, Rebuilding and Renewal that he wanted the coast to come back bigger and better than it was before Katrina hit on Aug. 29, 2005.
Vice chairman Anthony Topazi tells the Sun Herald that has happened.
Commissioners point to development of downtown Gulfport, Jones Park and the harbor as successes. Other Coast cities, including Ocean Springs, Bay St. Louis and Long Beach, have improved downtowns and streetscapes.
Former Biloxi Mayor Gerald Blessey says the commission's housing plans helped people get back into homes quickly.
He says there are about 1,000 more public housing units than before Katrina.
