Kewanee Protesters Continue Speaking Out

From the beginning, residents living on or around Kewanee Church Road have not been shy about their opposition to a road project that county officials say will improve what they call a dangerous curve in the road now. Some area so against the work, they attempted to keep work crews from actually working on the site.

"This is a waste of taxpayer money," Larry Landrum said. "And we don't really need this road when we've got another road running adjacent to it."

"I'm saying the one thing, we don't need this road," Cynthia Walker said. "We don't want this road. What I've seen since I've been standing here, supposedly people has donated this dirt to the county. Then, I want to know why are the county dumping the dirt back on his property."

Cythia walker says she feels the new road will be even more dangerous than the road that already exists, saying it will be a curve on a hill. Walker tells us she'd rather have a deep curve than what she calls a sharp curve on a hill.

Stanley L. Graham says he wants county supervisors to be held responsible for allowing this project to move forward.

"And I'm saying, Lauderdale County, we need to stand up and vote our conscious when it comes to electing these officers to do a job," Graham said.

In an interview with Newscenter Eleven this past week, District 2 Supervisor Wayman Newell said he stands by his decision to try and give drivers another route on the road.
