Meridian, Miss. The Lauderdale County Emergency Agency now has a new way of sending out emergency alerts to the public.
The Alert FM system has now been changed to Alert Studio.
It now allows the agency to send messages through social media. It also sends it through an IPAWS (Integrated Public Alert & Warning System) which FEMA has set up nationwide.
This change allows for people out of the state to get alerts that they would not have gotten in Mississippi.
"It gives us more options of getting the message out," said David Sharp. "A lot of people weren't in our system to get it over their phone, but a lot of people you know have their Facebook accounts tied to their smartphones."
If you want to make sure your phone can receive the updates via text message, contact your mobile carrier. Facebook users may follow LEMA's Facebook page.
