Meridian, Miss. Thousands of people are expected to fill the Lauderdale County Agri-Center Friday night for one of the most anticipated events each year, Relay for Life. Relay for Life event mentor, Gina Conner, says that over the years it has become staple in the community.
"Relay for Life has become our community signature event," said Conner. "It's an overnight event, where we recognize what cancer survivors go through because cancer never sleeps."
Over the past several years Lauderdale County's Relay for Life has consistently raised over a quarter of a million dollars placing it in the top 5 in relays across the Mid-South. Conner says it's a testament to the passion that people have to find a cure for cancer.
"Lauderdale County is a very giving community and I think that is just a signature of what we are and what we're all about," said Conner. "That speaks a lot for our area and what we do in our commitment to our survivors, our family, and our friends. We are just there for everybody."
Conner encourages everyone to attend this year's relay, in support of the theme that residents of Lauderdale County have always obtained.
"We Dream Big, We Hope Big and We Relay Big and that's our theme," said Conner. "We know that Lauderdale County does everything in a big way and we're going to prove it Friday night in the Lauderdale County Agri-Center."
The event kicks of this Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 3 a.m. at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center. Admission is $3 for anyone 12 years and older.
