Lawmakers Make Budget Approvals

After working most of Saturday, Mississippi lawmakers have approved most parts of the $5.6 billion state budget for the year that begins July 1.

They'll be back at the Capitol late Sunday afternoon, trying to finish their work on the spending plan.

On Saturday, the House and Senate approved bills to fund several big-ticket state services such as education, mental health and prisons.

Only a few budget bills were still being negotiated, including those for Medicaid and the Department of Public Safety.

House and Senate leaders were trying to work out significant differences in a bond package. The state issues bonds as long-term
financing for economic development projects and for items such as
repairs and renovations to state buildings.
