List of Failing Alabama Schools to be Released

Montgomery, Ala.

The Alabama Department of Education is planning to release a list of failing schools sometime next week.

AL.com reported that the new list will be based on test scores that were released this fall. Department spokeswoman Malissa Valdes-Hubert said she couldn't specify which day the list would be released.

The Alabama Accountability Act, which was passed last year, gives parents of students in failing schools a tax credit if their children transfer to private institutions.

More than 50 students switched to private schools last summer and more than 700 transferred to other public schools within their school system.
