Local VFW Officials React to Investigation

Meridian, Miss. Medical care for U.S. military veterans has come under a lot of scrutiny in recent days.

Twenty-six health care facilities for veterans in the U.S. are being investigated over allegations of treatment delays and some deaths attributed to the delays.

Newscenter 11 spoke with local VFW officials their opinion of the care Mississippi veterans are receiving.

"In general I would say that the care that the guys are receiving over there is very good, above average probably, but is it perfect? No. Are they working on it? I believe so," said Norma Copeland, VFW District 4 Commander. "And I think when all the dust settles there will be some bloody noses, but I think we will come out of this just fine."

"Mississippi is taking care of their veterans," said Curt Goldacker, quartermaster of VFW Post 12124. "The Sonny Montgomery VA, if Sonny Montgomery was alive today I think he would be a little upset by the way veterans are being treated nationwide. But I think he would be very proud of what Mississippi is doing for its veterans. "

Both Copeland and Goldacker credit the improvement in care in recent years to the new administration at the Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center.
