Louisville Tornado Damage

It's now being confirmed that an EF-4 tornado swept through Winston County Monday causing major damage. As of Tuesday afternoon that storm was being blamed for 9 deaths, and one person was still missing. Meanwhile, those who survived are trying to come to grips with what happened.

"I'm homeless," says Andra Smith. She's one of the tenants who survived the devastation caused by the tornado at the Revival Apartment Complex which was destroyed.

"I was just standing there looking and I saw all of the debris and trees and iron and tin and everything coming straight toward us," says Smith. "Everything over there is gone. We lost everything!"

According to residents who lived in the Jordan Circle Subdivision, which was located right off Highway 15 North in the southern part of Louisville, most of the 24 houses there were heavily damaged or destroyed.

Also, on the day after the storm only acres of rubble is left of what in the past was the Georgia Pacific plant, and the hospital in Louisville remains closed after receiving major damage.

"I work at the hospital, and I was there when it happened," says Carol Shields. "We were all gathered in like a bathroom. We had like patients in the emergency room. It was just horrible. I mean the tornado came right down through the emergency room. It was awful!"

"We're very hopeful that once they assess the damage that we can be back on line very soon,' says Louisville Mayor Will Hill. "In the meantime, a lot of effort has been put into having a location on the Highway 25/15 Bypass, as well as a medical clinic in downtown."

With hopes of restoring water to the entire city by Wednesday, Mayor Hill says Louisville is on track for what will likely be a lengthy, but sure recovery.

Monday's storms were severe and widespread. In fact, new information reveals that they generated at least 12 tornadoes in the state, which affected 20 Mississippi counties.
