Louisville Tornado Recovery Met with Numerous Challenges

By  |

Louisville, Mississippi Rescuers were still looking for people left missing by Monday's massive tornado when Winston County officials started thinking about the long-term recovery.

The county of 19,000 residents has three big challenges to overcome -- housing for hundreds left homeless, rebuilding its health care system after the twister shattered its hospital, and jump-starting damaged or destroyed businesses. Success in meeting those needs will help determine whether Winston County and the county seat of Louisville thrive or struggle in coming years.

Smithville, Mississippi, is one example of how long and hard a recovery can be. Smithville celebrated the rebuilding of its town hall last Sunday, three years after a tornado killed 16 residents and wiped out many buildings. Though structures have been rebuilt, Smithville's population has fallen from 900 to about 600.
