Luter Working to Unite Southern Baptists

Meridian, Mississippi The president of the nation's largest protestant denomination says he's working to bring Southern Baptists together.

Doctor Fred Luter, who was re-elected last month as president of the Southern Baptist Convention, spoke to members of Meridian's El Bethel Baptist Church on State Boulevard Tuesday night. Luter, who is also the SBC's first black president, says the past year has been a whirlwind of activity.

"Part of the things that I love that I've been, I've been going to a lot of smaller churches, a lot of smaller associations and conventions where it's the first time ever that an SBC president has been there, so that's been rewarding for me," Luter says.

Luter will be back in Meridian this weekend, preaching at Northcrest Baptist Church on Sunday morning. He will also take part in a special outdoor service in Dumont Plaza on Sunday evening.
