Local teachers were honored with Thad Cochran Distinguished Arts Educator awards.

Jennie Serven House of Northeast Middle School was recognized for music and Daniel Gilmer of Quitman Junior High School was awarded for arts integration.

"So we actually have three who are being honored at the state level which is quite exciting, and we're thrilled to have all of our area represented so well out of eleven awards today," said Dr. Charlotte Tabereaux, Riley Center education director.

Carla Briggs, whose husband is from Meridian, also received a Thad Cochran Distinguished Arts Educator Award for music. She teaches at Power Academic & Performing Arts Complex in Jackson.
