Mississippians voluntarily turned in to state and local law enforcement officers more than 300 pounds of expired or unneeded medications last week, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
"By doing so, residents ensured that their prescription drugs won’t end up in the hands of drug users or drug dealers," said MBN director, Marshall Fisher.
The Kemper County Sheriff's Department and other law enforcement agencies in the state cooperated with MBN for Prescription Drug Take-Back Day at nine locations Aug. 9.
Authorities say another way to safely dispose of unneeded medications is to mix them with something unappealing like used cat litter or coffee grounds, seal them in a bag or disposable container and throw them away. This also keeps someone from taking the drugs by mistake.
Officials say the non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in the United States.
