The Meridian Housing Authority hosted its annual appreciation luncheon Thursday, where residents and staff may visit in a relaxed atmosphere. But it also announced the receipt of a couple of dedicated grants.
Officials say grants from HUD and Mississippi Home Corporation will help add and improve housing.
$1.8 million is coming to help develop housing in the Carousel Place neighborhood. Another $6.6 million will be used over time elsewhere in the city.
"This is just something that, as a city, we take care of our citizens," said Wilbert Jones, chairman of the Meridian Housing Authority Commission. "And they can access affordable housing. And I want to be honest, be very candid with you, this is not a free giveaway. Our residents work. They contribute taxes to this community, but cannot afford some housing."
The $6.6 million grant will be divided into ten installments over a 10-year period.
