Meridian, Miss. It's the start of a new year as well as the start of a new season at Meridian Little Theatre. Once a year, Centerstage Youth Productions puts on a show for surrounding schools in our area.

This year, the play chosen is The Emperor's New Clothes. The cast is comprised of youth.

The plays are not only meant to be a thrilling experience for the cast, but also a learning experience they can take home with them.

"This is an exciting time for the children," said director Sidney Covington. "They absolutely love doing this. They love auditioning for it. It's also an educational experience. We teach the children a lot of the nuances of theatre. Also, the kids that get to come, it's the highlight of their school year."

The play is a comedy about two weavers who promise an emperor a new suit of clothes that is invisible to those unfit for their positions.

The cast has been rehearsing since early November for this production, and through the practices have created many new friendships they hope to carry on past the theatre.

"You have so many practices and you're here so many hours that you just grow close to all of your castmates," said Chloe McElvaine, who plays the empress. "Once you leave you don't see them for another year if you don't go to school with them."

The production will be presented to about 6,000 other students through the week.

The production will also be presented to the public Friday at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for adults are $15. Youth tickets are $12.
