MPD Releasing Less Detailed Crime Reports

Meridian, Miss. Meridian police are changing the way they keep the public informed about crime by releasing less information than they have in the past.

Each day, department officials release a report of crimes committed the day before to the media and on Facebook. On Thursday, and apparently from now on, that information will not include information about where car, business, and home burglaries took place.

Meridian Mayor Percy Bland released the following statement to Newscenter 11 about the change on Thursday afternoon:

"You may have noticed our media reporting format has changed," Bland said. "This change enables the Meridian Police Department to provide information to the public while not compromising ongoing investigations. As further information becomes available, such as arrests made, that information will be provided to you. We thank you for your work in keeping the public informed."

Newscenter 11 is attempting to obtain further information from Mayor Bland about why the change was made.
