MSO Gets State Donation

Meridian, Miss.

The Meridian Symphony Orchestra got a boost in next year's budget, thanks to state lawmakers and taxpayers.

State Sen. Terry C. Burton, along with symphony officials, made the announcement Monday. The legislature included $37,500 for MSO in the state education budget.

Burton noted the symphony plays a crucial role in our region's music education and entertainment.

The Meridian Symphony Association's executive director, Mark Altekruse, said the unexpected money will improve next year's operations.

"It's just wonderful. It shows the wonderful support that the state has for the culture of arts, for the arts economy that is very strong here in Meridian," said Altekruse. "And that donation is going to help us for our endeavors for next year; as a matter of fact, it's going to help push us over the top a little bit, we hope."

The symphony is starting its 53rd year in Meridian.
