Meeting Highlights Emergency Resources

Meridian, Miss. Representatives of nine counties in east central Mississippi and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians gathered in Meridian for a health care coalition Friday.

Emergency managers, hospital administrators, and other members of the health care sector all participated in a coalition that will plan for emergencies that may impact this area.

Officials with the Mississippi Department of Health talked about state resources that can assist counties in the event of a disaster or public health emergency.

"One of the examples that we used for resilient communities, which is really what a lot of healthcare coalition development is about is helping develop more resilient communities to respond to and recover from disasters in our state," said Jim Craig of the Mississippi Department of Health.

Craig pointed to the West Texas fertilizer plant explosion of 2013 as an example of a community that rebounded quickly from a disaster.
