Meridian, Miss. Efforts are being made to attract more people to the Meridian Activity Center. Volunteers were at the center Thursday helping to spruce up its exterior. Along with soliciting volunteers, center officials are making special efforts to reach even more potential patrons.
"We have exercise, yoga and now we have tai chi and zumba," says center director, Barbara Wells. "So, it's always been that 21 years and older can use this center. It's a service to the community."
In all, there are at least 30 classes or programs that are offered at the Meridian Activity Center. They take place Monday through Friday throughout the day and evening. Many of these classes last up to 8 weeks, and the average cost for senior citizens from Meridian is roughly $10.
"Our prices here are so low to get the community to come in," says Wells. "We're serving the community."
Several years ago the name of the center changed from the Meridian Senior Citizens Center to the Meridian Activity Center. Although it still caters to some degree to the needs of active senior citizens, Wells stresses that the offerings are wide ranging. From computer, to craft and cooking classes she says the programs are for adults of all ages.
"$10 for 24 classes, where can you find that price anywhere?," says Wells. "So, we want to work with people. If you don't have $10, we'll work with you."
The next set of 8 week classes at the center will start August 11th. Registration for them is currently underway.
