Meridian Anticipating Large Crowds for State Games

Meridian, Miss. It's crunch time for workers at the State Games of Mississippi. They spent Thursday afternoon boxing up goodie bags for the more than 5,000 athletes that will be taking part in this year's State Games.

"Oh, we're having such a great time," Krilecia Gianakos says. The interns have been really hard at work, our staff has been hard at work. We have our athletic director who has been getting everything geared up for all six sports that we've got going on this weekend."

Archery, kickball, tennis, and swimming are just a few of the sports on tap for this weekend. State Games leaders tell us local restaurants and hotels are very excited about the games because of the big crowds they bring to the Queen City.

"But, in our last study, it was found that we brought $6.5 million to the state of Mississippi," Gianakos points out. "That's amazing. All the beds are full in the hotels, all of the restaurants are full and busy. I hear from restaurants all the time that can't wait for the games to get here this weekend and this month. I mean, it's great for the city of Meridian and the state of Mississippi."

Gianakos tells us another study will be conducted in the near future to see if the State Games are generating even more revenue since the last study was conducted back in 2011. One thing is for sure and that is more sports are on the lineup this year.

"So, we've been excited to keep growing as we always do every year," Gianakos adds. "With 37sports this year."
