Meridian, Miss. Meridian's City Council tonight voted to rezone property in the City's 1800 block of 24th avenue to make way for a Dollar General Store.
The vote was unanimous to rezone it from B-1 to B-2 to allow retail development. It's an issue that drew a lot of criticism about a year and a half ago in the Poplar Springs Historic District, when the same developer was eyeing the 1800 block as well as a property that is further north at The Point. Local property owner Tim Allred told the Council tonight he owns six properties near the 24th Avenue address in question, and five of the six are businesses. Councilman Dustin Markham says the developer promises an upscale design that will improve the area:
"The planning committee had already approved it, and it was up to us tonight to approve it." said Markham. "We think it would generate revenue. We think it will bring more taxes to this city that we can use to support our communities, and so we felt that it was a great addition to that community. "
The developer is Pinebelt, Inc. The Council told the owner the plans and design would have to be submitted to the council before a permit is issued.
