Work is currently underway at one of Meridian's busiest retail areas. Preliminary site work is being done on the second phase of the Meridian Crossings' project near Bonita Lakes Mall.
"They're in the process of lining up tenants. They're very optimistic about Meridian and looking forward to expanding their holdings here, and we're pleased to be dealing with them," says John McClure, who is the Community Development Director for the city of Meridian.
Although tenants are yet to be announced, McClure says that vacant space at the Meridian Crossings will likely be filled with retail and/or food and beverage establishments.
Other major projects that are underway near the interstate include two new hotels, which are both set to open this fall.
Located right off restaurant row along Highway 80 East, the Marriott project is set to open in November, and city officials are confident about the economic impact that it will have.
"That Tampa project right up on the hill will be the first Marriott property that we'll have in this market," says McClure, "and they have a number of very loyal travelers. So, we'll be getting people who might have been driving a little further to stay at a Marriott to stay with us now."
Aside from the Fairfield Inn, which is part of the Marriott hotel chain, work on a new three story Sleep Inn is also underway just off North Frontage Road.
McClure says the addition of the new hotels will only help to better market Meridian.
"The hotel industry changes and evolves, and people need to either reinvest and make those periodic improvements, or new things come in."
