Meridian High School continues to excel both on the field and in the classroom. The MHS Academic team recently traveled to Mississippi College in Clinton, to take part in the 31st Annual Mississippi Academic Competition.

The 12-member team came home a winner, taking first place in the state in a sudden-death round.

Team coach Mike Clymer says the success of the students is due in large part to a variety of things.

"I'm very proud of the students; they represent the high school very well, so I feel a lot of pride," said Clymer. "I think it's a tribute to the students themselves. It's a tribute to their families, and really, it speaks well of the courses that they have taken here at Meridian High and the teachers they have had."

Although knowledge in the classroom plays a big role in the competition, any topic is fair game. From the popular card trading game, Pokémon, to calculus.

Senior team member, Kyler Drury, says you can't study one particular thing to be ready for the competition. You just have to go and have fun.

"It's just a lot of fun. I've always liked to watch 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' and 'Jeopardy' and try and guess the answers on those," said Drury. "Now I get to do something a bit more like that. It's also nice to win. It's very exciting to bring a first place trophy or any kind of trophy to Meridian High School."

According to the captain of the team, Pearson Kelly, to see a spotlight on the academics at Meridian High is important.

"It feels great to bring a first place trophy back to Meridian High that isn't something based on athletics," said Kelly. "Those are important, but it's also important to show that Meridian High has a great academics program as well."

The MHS Team came out on top over 52 other teams. They had to beat five teams to win it all.

MHS defeated Central Academy followed by Northeast Jones, Parklane Academy, Northwest Rankin and then Clinton in the finals to take home the championship.
