Meridian Presented Another Water Award

The city of Meridian has won a second award for its water, this one for fluoridating the supply.

Public Works director, Hugh Smith, says the Mississippi Department of Health presented Meridian and 34 other Mississippi towns a water fluoridation quality award, for maintaining safe levels of fluoride in the city's water supply in 2012.

Smith says the city adds fluoride to help in preventing tooth decay in young people.

"All I can say is we have an excellent staff, very experienced, very dedicated," said Smith, who is also serving as Meridian's interim chief administrative officer. "So it just speaks volumes to the employees that we have. This award, as well as the first one, is just a notation that we have good employees and they're doing their jobs and I'm very proud of them."

The city's water system also won an award for best tasting water in Mississippi and Alabama in October 2013 from the American Water Works Association.
