Meridian Residents Properly Dispose of Hazardous Waste

On Saturday, area residents had the opportunity to dispose of items that can't be dropped in the garage can.

The city of Meridian hosted its semi-annual Household Hazardous Waste Day. Residents had a chance to dispose of old chemicals, pesticides, aerosols, anti-freeze, oil, tires, and even batteries. Organizer Odell Hopkins says it's one of the best environmental programs in the area these days.

"The batteries can be reused, recycled, and bring new life to them," Hopkins points out. "And then, there are some things within the batteries that are not good for the environment that should not be put into the ground. And the same thing with the other chemicals we collect."

Hopkins says by not properly disposing of items, chemicals can make their way into water systems, causing major problems in the process.
