Meridian, Mississippi A young teenager was found outside a Meridian home shot to death Sunday afternoon, in what family members are saying was a violent altercation.
Meridian police have been working nonstop to solve the murder of a teenage boy. Detective Dareall Thompson says the MPD's Violent Crime Unit responded to a residence on 11th street where the victim was shot outside a home.
"The Meridian Police Department received a call in the 2700 block of 11th Street that a male subject had been shot. Officers arrived on scene and did verify a male subject had been shot. He was transported to a local hospital," said Detective Thompson of the Meridian Police Department.
Family members say the teenager was shot in the neck during a violent altercation. He died from those injuries soon after. The victim's name is not yet being released, but Coroner Clayton Cobler tells Newscenter 11 that he was only 14 years old. Police already have one suspect in this case.
"We do have a person of interest in custody at this time, but it's still an ongoing investigation," said Thompson
Family members say there were multiple witnesses present, and Detective Thompson says they've been able to make quick progress thanks to help from the community.
"Based on some information, we have received several tips. We're going off those tips," said Thompson.
Those tips have helped to bring in their suspect in this case. Detective Thompson says the violent crime unit will continue working on this case until charges have been filed.
"We're going to work until we have somebody in custody or somebody charged for this crime," said Thompson.
Police are still asking anyone with any more information to please come forward.
Coroner Cobler says the victim's body has already been taken to Jackson for an autopsy. Police are awaiting those results. If you have any information , you can call Crimestoppers at 855-485-TIPS.
