Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant is expected to focus on public safety in his annual State of the State address.
Bryant gives the speech at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the House chamber at the Capitol. It will be aired live on Mississippi Public Broadcasting television and radio.
Republican Bryant is beginning his third year as governor, and he says he wants to find ways to make the prison system less expensive and more efficient. Mississippi has the second-highest incarceration rate in the country, only after Louisiana.
In a document released just before the current legislative session started, Bryant said he wants to improve the budget process by reducing the use of one-time money to pay for ongoing expenses. He also supports merit pay for teachers.
