Senate Approves Raises for Judges, DAs

The Mississippi Senate has given final approval to a bill that would increase the salaries of judges,
district attorneys and assistant district attorneys.

House Bill 484 would increase the salaries over a 4-year period.

Money for the judges' raises would come from increasing filing fees in civil courts.

Raises for district attorneys and assistant district attorneys would come from fee increases for various felonies and misdemeanors, including speeding.

Prosecutors and Supreme Court justices watched Wednesday as senators debated the bill.

Chief Justice William Waller says a new system for re-evaluating judges' salaries will prevent the court from having to involve itself so much in the legislative process in the future.

The bill goes to Gov. Phil Bryant, unless any senator holds it for more debate.

Well, I think they should bless all State Employees with a raise, not just the Judges and DA being that some of the State Employees doesn't make cost of living wages. I'm just saying!

I would like to see the list published of those who voted for these raises during this economic down turn, when all State Employees need a raise, along with everyone else.

Meridian judges need a raise because the "I owes you one" and "I know your people" good o boy way to do business don't pay in cash.

Raise the D.A.'s salary so offenders walk the streets to re-offend again. Maybe the offenders should pay for the D.A.'s salary increase since they are buying their way - OOPS! "plea bargaining" their way to a lighter punishment or NO sentence anyway.

I thought many Repulicans had made a "now tax increase" pledge. Well call it a fee or whatever, this is a tax increase. It further increases the cost of the public having access to the courts by increaseing filing fees which are already pretty steep.
